Is 40 old?

My fellow Wolfstar director Susie Lawrence has just upset me. In her post about Facebook Susie said “Yes I am old (40 - don’t mind admitting it…”.

Excuse me! Since when has 40 been old? I’m not 40 until next year, but I don’t feel ‘old’. I’ve got several friends who are older than me and they don’t even feel old.

Facebook might be dominated by younger people but lots of 30+, and even 40+, people I know are on it. I haven’t done a definitive analysis but of my 150 Facebook friends:

  • 71 are over 30
    • 24 are 30 or over
    • 47 are 40 or over
  • 19 of the over 30s are female

There are probably more, as I’ve tried to be generous and err on the side of caution when assessing peoples’ ages. The other thing is that a lot of the over 30s are genuine friends, where as most of my Facebook friends under 30 are more accurately ‘acquaintances’.

Most of my Facebook friends are also people I know professionally - clients, business contacts, journalists, politicians (or people working in politics) other PR, public affairs and marketing people.

Is 40 old? Please comment to let us know what you think?

Sometimes 40 is very old indeed. Normally, the morning after a long night before. A couple of neurofen and a glass of Andrew’s Liver Salts can take ten years off, though.

Is 40 old? Ask my kids. They’ve covered what I used to wear when I was a teenager in their history lessons!

You’re only as old as you feel! And being only 21, I feel fabulous!!!!

Is 40 old? I don’t know - it seems so long ago, I can’t remember.

Depends on who you ask the question. I remember when I was 16, anybody over 30 was already ‘old’. Nowadays, being (almost) 36, I have put the ‘being old’ age at around 70. So you still have some ‘younger years’ ahead as far as I am concerned… :-)

Hmm, I recently ‘discovered’ Octavia Butler, the author and immediately raced to Wikipedia to find out more about her. When I found out she had died at the age of 58, I thought it was tragically young. So no, 40 isn’t old at all.

I’m 21 with 33 extra years experience. Does that make me old? No - it makes me wise ;)

I was recently told that at 51 I was the oldest person someone knew on Facebook

When I was handling PR for Age Concern Liverpool, I was horrified to discover that their ‘active ageing’ campaign was to be aimed at “the over-49s”, putting me only 12 years away from being a potential Age Concern service user. But at their active ageing gym in Clubmoor, they had a 93-year-old, Arthur, who walked on the treadmill three times a week and referred to the 70-somethings there as ‘youngsters’. Guess it’s all relative!

Don’t you know that 50 is the new 30!

Ask your other fellow director Tim, I am sure he will agree

I’m turning 40 in June. When I mentioned this to a co-worker, he said, “Huh. You’re keeping yourself up, though.” Thanks, I think! I stress that I have laugh lines where there once were none. My middle never seems to shake its mid. A cosmetic dentist recently informed me that yes, I could have my “younger” smile back…for $15,000. My hands are showing the frightening signs of never wearing those awful yellow latex cleaning gloves. Scarier still, my car radio is tuned to an 80s station and I silently think how “Don’t You Want Me, Baby?” is one of the best songs EVER. Yet, would I want to go back? Not really. I’ve worked too hard and made too many good/bad choices to get where I am at this very moment. I also think of the scene from “Fried Green Tomatoes”, where Kathy Bates says, “Face it, girls, I’m older and I have more insurance.”

Well I have to say i turned 40 this year and still get as much male attention as I did at 21!

No, it isn’t old, only to someone in puberty maybe, which extends to the thirties these days…. That makes 40 young adult..

I’m not kidding with that thought
